BluAmulette Reg'd Kennel
History of the Silky Terrier:

The Yorkshire Terrier and Australian Terrier were
cross bred in Australia in the 1900's to produce
what is known today as the Silky Terrier. It has
been said that the Dandie Dinmont Terrier may have
also played a part in creating the Silky. It may have
given the Silky the silver top knot and length in the
body.
Silky Character:

The Silky was bred to kill vermin and snakes as
are most Terriers. They are very quick and agile,
never missing any movement. They are very feisty
and intelligent but can also be a little stubborn.
Silkies have their own ideas of what is important
and have a lot of character.
I find their personality quite amusing most of the
time but it can be a little annoying when you are
calling them and they decide to go the other way.
Silkies are very playful and full of energy. They
love their toys. They play with children and other
dogs quite well.  They are usually very social.
Once they have used up some energy, they make
very good lap dogs and are very loving.
Grooming the Silky Terrier:
This could be a long subject!
There are basically 2 coat types. One is Blue & Tan, the other
Silver & Tan. The blue & tan coat tends to be a little more coarse
than the silver. This makes the blue easier to groom. The silver is
usually a softer, finer coat. It can be quite a challenge to keep
tangle free.
Tools:
steel comb!
detangling spray
long pin brush (no pin tips)
scissors
narrow clippers
nail clippers

Bathing your Silky once a week can be helpful depending on how
dirty they get.
Clip nails.
A slightly damp Silky is best to start with.
Spray with detangler then comb through the whole coat with the
steel comb. Start from the tips of hair, comb them out and work up.
( I don't mean back comb).
Then gently go over entire dog with pin brush.
Ears and paws should be clipped. Tidy with scissors: coat length
just above paws and between pads.
Pet Silkies have a beautiful coat that is quite easily managed if
scissor cut to 3 or 4 inches.
You can comb through their coat once a day or some can go
without grooming for a week.
Product Tips: Show Dog
Wahl Detangling spray
Coat Polish (oil for moisturizing coat: best for me on damp coat)
Swishy Coat (plush Puppy)

Hope this helps if you are new to the Silky Terrier. I am still
learning myself.
